This magnificent Romanesque initial ‘P’ was painted in northern Italy in the mid- to late 12th century and originally opened a major division of a Latin manuscript—likely a monastic or cathedral book of theology or canon law.

The letter is executed in rich red pigment with alternating blue geometric panels, all enclosed in sharply defined red bands typical of Italian Romanesque decoration. Inside the bowl of the initial, swirling vinework frames a blue fleur-de-lys motif, while the elongated foliate descender extends dramatically downward in sweeping curves over 10 inches long. These extended terminals are characteristic of high-quality Italian decoration of the period.

This initial was once mounted on card and later separated, resulting in faint evidence of the previous mount on the reverse—consistent with its documented sale history.
