This elegant illuminated ‘G’ exemplifies the bold red-and-white decorative vocabulary of Italian Romanesque scriptoria. The letter’s interior features finely controlled vinework terminating in curled foliate tips, all executed with surprising delicacy for such a compact initial.

Painted on vellum in the 12th century, this initial comes from the same manuscript as the other initials once grouped in the distinguished Simkhovitch and Arcade Gallery collections. Its crisp curves and balanced composition reflect the transition toward more rhythmic, geometric ornamentation in late Romanesque book art.
