Rare 1499 Incunabula Woodcut – Christ and the Samaritan Woman at the Well
Printed in Zwolle, Netherlands | Peter van Os | Master of Jacob Bellaert
This is an original uncolored woodcut cutting from a 1499 Dutch devotional work, Dat boec vanden leuen ons liefs Heeren Iesu Christi (The Book of the Life of Our Beloved Lord Jesus Christ), attributed to Ludolph of Saxony. It was printed in Zwolle by Peter van Os, a leading printer in the northern Netherlands during the incunabula period.
The artwork is attributed to the Master of Jacob Bellaert, a well-known Dutch woodcut artist active in the 1480s. This image depicts Christ speaking with the Samaritan woman at the well, a powerful New Testament scene drawn from John 4.
