Authentic 15th Century Medieval Manuscript Leaf – Gregorian Chant
This is a genuine hand-written and illuminated manuscript leaf from a 15th-century choir book (gradual or antiphonary), produced on vellum (animal skin). It features beautifully preserved square notation on a red four-line staff and Gothic textura script, typical of choir manuscripts used in monastic or cathedral settings.
Details:
• Date: c. 1400–1500
• Material: Vellum (animal parchment)
• Script: Gothic textura quadrata
• Music Notation: Square neumes on 4-line red staves
• Text: Latin Marian hymn praising the Virgin Mary
• Rubrics: Red instruction at the bottom (“In festis duplicibus ad Magnificat”)
• Condition: Good for its age, with some age-related wear, staining, and minor edge loss. No restoration or modern writing.
Translation of part of the chant:
“Beautiful Virgin, pray to God’s only-begotten Son, and obtain for us this: break the noise of our cries…”
The leaf is part of a larger hymn praising the Virgin Mary, used during high feast days in the Divine Office.
A stunning example of late medieval Christian devotion, art, and music—ideal for collectors, scholars, musicians, or framing and display.
