This original 1776 Bible leaf comes from Christoph Sauer II’s historic third edition—the first Bible printed in America using American-made type and the first European-language Bible printed in North America. Issued in Germantown, Pennsylvania during the same year as the Declaration of Independence, it represents a foundational moment in both American religious and printing history.
The text, printed in blackletter Fraktur, is in German and comes from the Book of Numbers (4 Mose), detailing the borders of the Promised Land and the cities assigned to the Levites.
