This lively Romanesque ‘S’ is distinguished by its rhythmic red vinework and uncommon deep green foliate trefoils, a color combination typical of northern Italian manuscripts of the 12th century. The sweeping red outlines and decorative terminals show a confident hand working within a mature Romanesque style.
The initial was separated from its original vellum leaf long ago and retains the beautifully aged texture of 12th-century parchment. Its provenance traces back to two respected manuscript collectors/dealers of the mid-20th century.
