This amazing manuscript is a beautiful Breviary!

This Latin manuscript fragment on parchment was recovered from a book binding. With 2 large initials

"R" and "A" in red and blue as well as large decorative initial "O" and rubrication. Italy (Tuscany) mid-12th century.

Very early example of a breviary from central Italy, probably from Tuscany. Fragment with parts of the songs "Ales diei nuntius" by Prudentius and "Rerum creator optime" for the Wednesday morning as well as the opening of Psalm 52. Very clean, unbound late Carolingian minuscules. - Above and below with restoratively supplemented excerpts, a hole, abrasion with loss of text, browning, signs of use, beautiful, very early sheet.

An early manuscript with an illuminated initial like this is extremely rare. Although it has some condition issues (see listing photos) it’s an amazing, beautiful and rare piece!

Size: 23.1 x 15.8 cm. See listing photos for measurements in inches.

Provenance:

Quaritch 1991. The Marvin L. Colker
