This authentic iron blade originates from Central or Northwestern Europe and dates broadly to the Viking through later medieval period (ca. AD 8th–16th century). The piece survives as a heavily patinated but clearly identifiable edged tool representative of medieval ironworking.
The blade exhibits the expected effects of long-term burial and environmental exposure, with significant surface corrosion and mineralization consistent with excavated iron artifacts of the medieval period. Despite this wear, the original blade form remains discernible, including the elongated profile and tapered point typical of utilitarian knives or small edged implements of the time.
Artifacts of this type are commonly recovered from fields and waterways across Northern Europe, where centuries of oxidation have produced the stable, dark patina now visible on the surface. The piece offers an honest example of medieval ironworking and archaeological survival.
According to the documented provenance, the blade derives from a private London collection, formerly part of the W.P. collection assembled in the 1990s and acquired on the German art market.
Please note: due to lighting and photography, the metal appears somewhat lighter in the images. In hand, the surface presents darker.
